Startup PR: How to Pitch Tech Media & Journalists
Learn how to draft press pitches, identify relevant journalists, and get your startup featured on top tech publications and news sites.
Getting Featured in Major Publications
Getting featured in publications like TechCrunch or VentureBeat provides massive credibility and valuable backlinks. However, journalists receive hundreds of spam pitches daily. You must stand out.
Focus on the news hook. A new launch is rarely news. A trend, a massive achievement, or a unique industry data point is news.
1. Crafting the Perfect Pitch
Keep your pitch brief, personal, and focused on why their specific audience would care:
- 1The Hook: State a compelling trend or problem immediately in the first sentence.
- 2The Story: Briefly explain how your product addresses this trend or represents a new approach.
- 3The Assets: Provide a link to a clean press kit containing screenshots, founder bios, and logos.
- 4The Simple Ask: Close with a clear, low-friction request ('Are you open to a brief chat about this next week?').
2. Finding and Researching Journalists
Do not send generic press releases to media distribution lists. Target specific writers:
- 1Target Niche Writers: Find journalists who actively cover your specific category (e.g., SaaS, mobile tools, AI productivity).
- 2Audit Their History: Read their last 5 articles. Reference one of their recent pieces to show you've done your homework.
